DESCRIPTION:

PLEASE NOTE: When operating Walthers-branded DCC-equipped locomotives in DC mode, do not use power packs that exceed an 18V rating. This includes MRC 1300-series power packs, which have known issues with our decoders.

Walthers Mainline Phase II Chopped Nose GP9 is a must-have model for your 1960s and later diesel roster! Outwardly similar to the earlier GP7, and sharing the same boxy, no frills body with its high, short hood, minor production changes in the number and placement of louvers on locomotives built from 1955 to 1957 resulted in what modelers and railfans refer to as “phase two” GP9s. In the 1960s, many roads began rebuilding their GP9s as an affordable alternative to new equipment, and many were refitted with chopped short hoods to improve forward visibility. Like it’s prototypes, many are still going strong today and the Walthers Mainline Phase II GP9 with chopped nose is perfect power for any assignment and features:

  • One time run of these road numbers – order now, limited quantity available!
  • Detailed body with chopped nose
  • Based on Phase II units rebuilt in the 1960s by many owners
  • Scale width hood with correct contours
  • With or without dynamic brakes as appropriate
  • See-through steps
  • Correct RP-25 metal wheels

Available with ESU Sound and DCC for DCC or DC layouts featuring:

  • 4 function outputs with brightness control by CV
  • Fully DCC compatible
  • 14, 28 or 128 speed steps
  • Dual mode DC and DCC
  • 4 Airhorns changeable by CVs
  • 2 bells changeable by CVs
  • Full 8-notch prime mover sounds
  • Compressor
  • Dynamic brake

Same powerful drive as Walthers Proto(R) locos featuring:

  • Five-pole skew-wound motor
  • 14 to 1 gear ratio
  • Helical-cut gears for quiet operation and easy multiple unit operation
  • All-wheel drive and electrical pickup
  • Machined brass flywheel
  • Heavy die-cast metal chassis
  • Constant and directional LED headlights
  • 21-pin DCC plug
  • Molded drill starter points – add grab irons to your model easily with the GP9 Phase II Diesel Detail Kit (#910-258 sold separately)

As part of a rebuilding program started in the late 1960s, the Milwaukee Road upgraded several GP9s to 2000 horsepower, and chopped the short hood. These rebuilt units were designated as “GP20” by the Milwaukee, and received new model ID plates, as used on EMD’s actual GP20 engines.
